Decision

Apr 29, 1998
Hamburg, Germany

Decision comes only when there is confusion. When there is no confusion then there is no decision. For example, if there is a piece of wood and a biscuit on your desk, you don't decide which one to eat, isn't that right? Decision is always about choice and choice is always confusing. So, all decision-makers are confused! (Laughter)

Action is spontaneous when there is no actor. In you, there is an actor and there is a witness. An actor is either confused or decisive, but the witness realizes that the action is spontaneous and smiles.

The more decisions you make, the more confused you are, and as a result you swing between pain and pleasure. The more the witness grows in you, the more playful and untouched you are. Trust, faith, love and joy all manifest in and around you.

Are you confused, decided or happy now?

Eberhard: Confusion is too strong of an expression. Is it not rather "choice"?

Urmila: We are decided that choice is confusion. (Everyone laughs)

Hans Peter: Is there any freedom without confusion?

Sri Sri: When you are confused, there is no freedom.

Hans Peter: What is freedom of choice?

Sri Sri: Confusion! (Laughter)

Feel Blessed

This deep sense of feeling that “I am blessed” can help you overcome any obstacles in life. It gives you courage and confidence and it will open your lid for grace to be poured in.

Once you realize that you are blessed, then:

* All the complaints disappear * All the grumbling disappears * All the insecurities disappear * A sense of feeling unloved disappears * Wanting love disappears.

If you don’t realize you are blessed, then the doership begins.

If you want to make a difference in your life, feel you are

blessed.

And especially for those on this path of knowledge, there is no reason for you to not feel blessed.

So, feel you are blessed.

This is the first step towards the Self.

God as a child

God is the very core of your existence. You are pregnant with God. You have to take care of your pregnancy and deliver the child into the world. Most people do not even deliver. One who delivers can also grant wishes.

God is your child. He/She clings onto to you like a baby till you grow old and die. God keeps crying for nourishment. God clings onto the devotee. He/She needs you to nourish Him/Her in the world. Sadhana, Satsang and Seva are the nourishment.

You always think of God as a father. Then you want to demand and take from God. But when you see God as a child, you have no demands.

Belma says: You cannot pray to a child; you can only pray to your father.

Sri Sri: Why do you want to pray? Why do you want to ask? A good father knows what to give.

Belma: What about surrender?

Sri Sri: Your surrender to a child is more authentic as it has no demand.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR GOD! Atheists are around the corner! Doubts, disbelief and ignorance are atheists in your mind, so better take care of your God!

getting rid of stress

Getting Rid of Stress

How do you get rid of stress? How can you be tension

 free?

Look at tension. Isn't it about what happened yesterday or the day before? Ten years ago? You're holding onto the past, which has gone! All your anger is about the past, isn't it? Can you get the past back?

At any moment, see what your mind is doing. It is going into the past... It is angry about the past or anxious about the future, isn't it?

Do you remember the 10 years ago? Just look back and see. Weren't you anxious? Five years ago, weren't you anxious? ... What will happen? .. But you have moved through life haven't you?

By looking at your own life, you can see it was useless to be anxious about the future: "What will happen?" - its a waste of time, a waste of energy.

When this oscillation of the mind stops, THAT is when you get in touch with the source of energy, which is YOU.

Live in the moment. NOW!

More knowledge

Education:

By the age of 17, he obtained an advanced degree in Modern Physics, and later received an Honorary Doctorate from Kuvempu University, Karnataka, India.

Training Under Guru Mahesh Yogi:

At an early age his father, R S V Ratnam delegated him to the care of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a renowned spiritual master. After attaining his degree in science, Ravi joined Maharishi's entourage, taught the Vedic pundits at Maharishi's charities, and soon became the Maharishi’s favourite disciple.

Enlightenment & Vision:In 1982, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar went into ten days of silence and emerged as an enlightened master. It is believed that during this time he cognized the famous Sudarshan Kriya breathing technique. In order to spread the kriya and other related knowledge, Sri Sri subsequently set up the Art of Living (AOL) Organization in 1982.

The Art of Living:Today the Art of Living Foundation is the world’s largest volunteer based Non-Governmental Organization, active in over 140 countries. Sri Sri is also a member of the Council of the Divinity School at Yale University.

His Message:Sri Sri Ravi Shankar travels extensively across the globe to inspire youth to work together for a better society. As he says, “Religion is the banana skin and spirituality is the banana. The misery in the world is because we throw away the banana and are holding on to the skin.” Sri Sri believes that all religions and traditions have a common value system, and these shared values have to reach every corner of the world in order to make it a better place for all.

Navratri in Rajkot and some Knowledge

What is Indian way of knowing, seeing, experiencing and sharing the essence of thing and essence of very life. There are four aspects of Indian experience and knowledge.

1) there is a cosmic power, a cosmic consciousness pervading and enveloping all things, moving and non moving, making up an universal whole
2) an element of that cosmic consciousness is inside all: you, me and all things.
3) The light of cosmic consciousness inside and outside can be experienced and realized by “Sadhana” - the intensive endeavourer thought four approach of believing, Behaving, becoming and Being the form of devotion, work , knowledge and meditation (Bhakti, karma, gnaana and Dhyaana)
4) This conscious experience can be transmitted between teacher and learner , parent and child, master and master , and generation to generation, which is “parampara”- the chain of flow of awareness. It is also clear in Indian approach that teacher who has knowledge alone and communication ability can only transmit the knowledge alone and the learner has to experience through own efforts for understanding the teaching though receiving, practicing and improving. This process generates powerful, energy full thoughtful and useful personalities, generation after generation.

This is a spirit of Upanishads. This is the secret in Upanishads. Every Upanishads is the concluding part of one of the Vedas. At the beginning and at the conclusion of the study of any Upanishads, the prayer belonging to the veda to which perticuler Upanishads is related is invoked.

Navratri that we see only 0.003% of what is actually happening.
Q: You said at the Navratri that we see only 0.003% of what is actually happening. Can you please talk on that?

Sri Sri: You know there was this scientist named Mickel Kako who established a theory, after having done several experiments and research, that there are parallel worlds. It is he who said that, what we see is only 0.003% of what is actually happening. What we cannot see is the 'Dark Energy'.What we cannot see is the 'Dark Energy'. That's what he named it. The power of that 'Dark Energy' is unlimited! It is immense! In fact our Rig-Veda also says the same thing. The 'Dark' is referred to here as the 'Tamas'. Even Rig-Veda says that this 'Tamas' has great power. That's why they say 'Kali'. The dark Goddess. She just do not symbolize destruction, she is also referred to as the epitome of knowledge. Like the pupil of our eye is dark! It is because of that we can see. Do you see what I am saying? The source of knowledge is the 'Kaali'

sri sri share some word

Inaugural address by His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at the ‘Peace and Reconciliation in South Asia – Challenges and Opportunities’ conference, Oslo ( April 10, 2008)

I am happy to be here with all of you this evening. It is a very important occasion that we all have come together to find a common solution. Often with meetings, we discuss the problems – then the problems appear so big. When the problems appear insurmountable, conflicts remain as conflicts and continue for centuries. Then one loses heart. However, here, we have people from various fields and from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, social and economic strata, all coming together, sincerely looking for a solution – because we want peace. Enough is enough – we have had so much violence.
Today, we have two types of extremism. One kind comprises religious extremists while the other are communist extremists. And then there are ethnic conflicts. These are the three major types of conflicts we need to look into – this is what is clogging South Asia.
We also face the problem of poverty – there are certain forces which, for political reasons, personal gains or other reasons, are using poverty of people for their own ends by not giving them the right picture, the right direction to move ahead.
Here, we all have to bring sense and come up with solutions to the conflicts. The world, life, is full of contradictions and conflicts, and it is wisdom that helps us to sail through these.
We need to look at life with the ‘Three Cs’:
a Cosmic (or broader) vision of a problem.
Commitment. Without commitment, you will not be able to move a step forward – we need to have commitment for peace.
Compassion – without compassion, you cannot understand another person’s point of view.
Often, when you listen to conflicting points of view, you will find that everyone is correct from their own view point. If you listen to the Tamils, you would side by them. If you listen to the Sinhalese, you would side by them. If you listen to the Maoists, you would side by them. If you listen to the government, you would side by them. Everybody has their own logic, their own view point. We have to find a way where we can meet and come together in peace.
India has been the country of non-violence for centuries. In thousands of years of history, India has never waged a war against any country, nor has it conquered any country. Of course, it has been fighting wars in self-defense. India is the land where Buddha and Mahavir gave their teachings and where Mahatma Gandhi preached nonviolence. Today, the country is affected by different types of violence. And it pains us to see the suffering of people, of men, women and children.

A couple of years ago, when I was in Chhattisgarh, (India), the Inspector General of Police came to me with tears in his eyes. He said, “This year, 281 of my men were killed. I do not know how to face the families of men who were working under me. How can I recruit young men for the police? I feel I am recruiting them for a job and putting them to death. I am so traumatised.” It was so moving to hear this – it would shake anybody. One gets the same sense of suffering when you look into the eyes of women and children, millions of whom are bereaved of their families. These are man-made calamities, which can be avoided, unlike a natural one like the tsunami. This is what we need to do – all of us here, sincerely pray and take responsibility to bring peace, to turn every tear into a smile and dream for a stress-free, violence-free world.

  • His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
I see a crisis facing the world today. It is fundamentally one of identification. People identify themselves with limited characteristics such as gender, race, religion and nationality, forgetting their basic identity as part of the universal spirit. These limited identifications lead to a conflict on a personal level and a global one.
Every individual is much more than the sum of these limited identifications. The highest identification we can make is that we are part of Divinity. The second identification is as human beings and members of the human family. In divine creation, the whole of the human race is united.
Alongwith the proper identification of our true nature, we need to return to the values that are the essence of all major traditions. Religion has three aspects: values, rituals and symbols. Moral and spiritual values are common to all traditions. Symbols and practices - those rituals and customs that form a way of life within a religion - are what distinguishes one tradition from another and give each their charm. The symbols and practices are like a banana skin. Spiritual values - the quest for truth and awareness of our divinity - are the banana. However, people in every tradition have thrown away the banana and are holding on to the skin!
This distinction between value and ritual and symbol was made in ancient times. The Sanskrit term smriti refers to those practices that are appropriate to time and place. Those things which are time bound. Shruti refers to those values that are timeless.
In the right order of things, what is time bound is secondary to what is timeless or eternal. However, in all the traditions, we find the order inverted. People tend to honor what is time-bound (the symbols and practices - those things which give them an individual identity) more than the values, which are timeless. Then fanaticism flourishes and the differences have to be defended. We can see this today in the wars taking place around the world in the name of religion. If we could focus on the values, the larger truth that the symbol represents, then most of the conflicts in the world would be resolved.
Symbols vary between religions because they relate to the relative factors of location, environment and time. The crescent moon and star on the flag of Islam was chosen by people living in a desert region, where the evening is a pleasant relief from the scorching heat of the day. The sun was chosen as a religious symbol in Japan and in Tibet where it gives welcome warmth and a feeling of elevation. Symbols are relative, but they are intended to lead us to something beyond the symbol, to the essence of religion. We need to reach for the deeper values and not be distracted by the apparent differences.
Practices are also time-bound, dictating how you should dress, what name you are to take, what you can eat, how many wives you may have, how a person should be punished if they make some mistake. In all traditions you find practices like these that were necessary at the time they were instituted, but they may no longer serve a good purpose today. In the Koran, it is prescribed that if someone steals, their hand must be cut off. At one time a Christian who wanted to be religious had to take a vow of poverty. Jains were not allowed to touch money (this dilemma was solved by having a companion carry their money for them). Jews could do no work on the Sabbath. Those who follow this rule today cannot turn on a light switch.
Human values are social and ethical norms common to all cultures and societies as well as religions. They represent a melding of social progress, justice and spiritual growth.
    The timeless values are
  • a deep caring for all life
  • a responsible attitude toward the planet
  • non-violence
  • compassion and love
  • friendliness and compassion
  • generosity and sharing
  • integrity, honesty and sincerity
  • moderation in one's activity
  • service
  • commitment and responsibility
  • peace, contentment, enthusiasm
Much of the misery that has come into the world in the name of religion can be avoided by reintroducing these shared values. And it is not necessary to use guilt and fear to promote these values. You will find in the history of all the religious systems in the world that guilt and fear were used to control people, but such discipline is not needed today. At this time we need only to cultivate love and understanding.
    Power of love

sri sri say something in satsang

The following day the satsang was out on the beach again. But this time we forgot to inform the moon - so the satsang started with a few stars twinkling, a few clouds hovering but no sign of the moon. Some kids were playing around behind Guruji's couch and one small one kept coming up and staring at Guruji in the intense manner small children have - there were some efforts to get the kids off but finally Guruji said - 'let them play'. He was a little more strict on the singers - when one song started, he interrupted it to say, "This is too complicated for everyone, let's sing a simpler one." When later another song started, he again interrupted to say, "this is not in the right key." And he kept looking back, saying, "the moon is not here."

Q and A
Q: Guruji, have you ever been in love...with a woman?!
A: (there was a surge of laughter and perhaps curiosity in the group as we waited for the answer) "Not in this lifetime!" Guruji smiled and then with his usual innocent, sincere expression continued - "In this lifetime? For me, love is not a verb, it is a noun. Love is a substance we are made up of - so I can only think of love in that fashion. As a noun, not a verb." He looked at six hundred faces, nodding but still looking confused, still waiting...."Yes, I know it's not easy for you to know where I am or what I am..."

Q: How do you deal when you were in love with someone and they were in love with you but it doesn't seem to be the case now...
A: Don't demand love. Demand destroys love. Just assume that someone loves you.
Tell them, I know you love me. Even if they don't they will start loving you.
If they say they don't love you - just say, no, no, you're kidding, I know you love me!

You know in marriage - now this I have heard, I have no experience - but being married to someone is saying "I am here for you" If you can keep that feeling, that attitude, then it works.

Q: How to deal with someone who is older and is being very negative - should we listen?
A: It happens - when people get older, if they don't have pranayama, kriya, meditation, then the words can become more negative. Listen, but filter it. And it doesn't help to talk and convince them. When someone is in that state - they are deaf - they cannot hear you. You should not confirm their negativity - just agreeing with them is not the way. Neither is trying to convince them or confronting them - don't pour oil on fire. They will not respond to your words.
It's better to deal with humor. Just tell them, come let's sing, let's dance.
That's a much better way to deal with it. I have tried this out. It does work!

Q: Is it wrong to have ambition to have money - some financial security?
A: Money does not work for security. That's a false notion. You look at the richest people - you don't see security in them. Yes, money does bring some physical comforts. If you work hard - then money will come and let it come. If you have a lot of ambition and don't work hard - if you're lazy then it becomes a problem. Those who work hard - they don't worry about money - it comes.
And you get what you need, especially on this path - at the right time the hep comes. The soul inside you is capable of providing what you need. Isn't this happening for everyone? Yes, you can put your hands up. (A lot of hands go up - in a staggered fashion as the translation makes its way through the multiple
languages)

Guruji asked about a particular process during the course - "how many of you had good experiences? How many of you felt nothing?" You know what blocks you from experiences is your intellect. Intellect is a very small part of the brain. Experiencing is in a diametrically opposite part of the brain. If energy is only concentrated in one part of the brain then you won't get the experiences. It's lke you can't say I want to sleep - I want to sleep - you won't get sleep. You'll get insomnia! No, you must relax and be innocent, like a child.

You don't have to do anything. Just relax. That's the new mantra - Do not meditate. Just sit and let the energy in you get peace. You just sit. You know I created a revolution in the Ashram. For more than twenty years we've had satsang every evening. Every evening people come and sing and enjoy. I said for one month - no singing! Just come and sit for one hour, two hours. In silence.
And you know people have had such experiences. We get many more people coming now than we did when there was singing!

Q: I am able to help people with knowledge but I am unable to apply it to myself.
A: Then come to more courses like this. Be a student here and in courses and also in life. You know , just because someone has become a teacher, it doesnt mean you've got everythting - that you're done! No, no, come and sit at a basic course with another teacher. Look at the points - "accept people", "don't see intention", and see how to apply it to yourself.
